With Nexon’s comprehensive mid-life cycle update, Tata Motors has taken India’s bestselling compact e-SUV to a league of its own. While Mahindra has also given the XUV400 a fresh set of much-needed updates, the Tata rival feels like a new car altogether. The under ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom) price bracket for EVs is a tricky one as the two vehicles continue to dominate the segment and have stories of their own to tell.
Range
The Nexon EV is available in nine variants, each paired to either Medium Range (MR) or Long Range (LR), with ARAI ranges of 325 kilometres and 465 kilometres, respectively, on a single charge. Notably, the Creative + base model is exclusively sold with the MR guise.
XUV400’s EC Standard base variant shines here with a claimed range of 375 km, an additional 50 km range than its rival. The other two EL trims come with a range of 456 km.
Battery specifications
The estimated fast charging time (10%-80%) from a 50 kW DC fast charger for both the 30 kWh MR and 40.5 kWh LR batteries is 56 minutes, while the AC charging unit takes up to 15 hours depending on the battery size, as claimed by Tata.
Mahindra took a similar route in its battery bundle for the XUV400 by offering the EC (34.5 kWh) and the EL (39.4 kWh) NMC cell variants, distinguished by their range. A 50 kW DC fast charger takes only 50 minutes to charge the bigger EL battery pack from 0–80%, as opposed to a charging time of 6.5 hours from a 7.2 kW AC charger for a full charge.
Price
Starting at a price of ₹14.74 lakh and going up to ₹19.94 lakh (introductory, ex-showroom), Nexon EV’s base and top-end variants have become dearer by ₹25,000 and ₹65,000 than the outgoing model. However, the premium here is justified with the new additions.
On the other hand, Mahindra has priced the XUV400 from ₹15.98 lakh-₹19.39 lakh (ex-showroom). The range-topping EL DT Fast trim easily stands out as it is cheaper by ₹55,000.
